So I thought only Immigrants Migrated?!  😂😂

So, the number ONE thing to see in Kenya and Tanzania- the reason I did not just go to South Africa which is MUCH cheaper…..is THE ANNUAL WILDEBEEST GREAT MIGRATION. What’s this whole thing about anyways and why is it a big deal? This is the single largest migration not only in all of Africa, but all of the world. We are talking 1.3-1.6 million wildebeests led by a group of 300-400 thousand zebras (who have a better sense of direction) and lead the wildebeests every year. They do this to follow the rains- for grazing. This always happens at the same places and MOSTLY THE SAME TIMES BUT VERY UNPREDICTABLE in terms of planning to see it. It may come later, it may come earlier. We are early. The very VERY best time is culminated at the Mara River (which we just crossed over) but in the Massai Mara- more north of me right now (I’m at the boarder of Kenya and Tanzania right now). This is a big deal because they have to cross this river- and many many die crossing, by drowning, trampling, crocs, and predators waiting on the other side. That typically happens in August- I don’t really want to see that bloodbath frankly. I did see them at the Grumeti River this morning- the river in the Serengeti- they all get excited and start mooing like a much of starved cattle- it was wild. But the Grumeti is seasonal and down to water holes right now- so thankfully no bloodbaths. WHEW! What is the WESTERN CIRCUIT? There are 2 paths that lead to the Mara river. One is through the Serengeti in Western Tanzania, and one is to the North through the Serengeti through Northern Tanzania- there they ALL meet up and pass into the Masai Mara together- and cross the river. They graze there before turning to head south again and start the cycle over again. The epic time is now through August (September if late). And there you have it. If you don’t see them actually migrating, you will see wildebeests in small groups just grazing but they will not be in the single file running on the move following each other by the thousands- that only is found in the migration pattern. And even that stops when they stop to graze for months at a time too. They only MOVE at certain times- we caught one of those times! This was what all the excitement was about!!!
